Olympic Skate Park
Skate park contextualized in the urban environment of Downtown Toronto
Skate parks are programmatically relatively free of prescribed parameters, yet include the components catering to the two major types of skateboarding styles: park and street. Where park skateboarding focuses on dramatic ramps and bowls for aerial tricks, street skateboarding courses prioritize simulating urban conditions.
The program for a skatepark on downtown Toronto, is looking to integrate each of the stakeholders into the skate culture. The park is looking to invite not only the athletes who would be using the installations for practicing the sport, but to allow for the spectator to be part of this culture and observe. Being the location selected the Olympic park, which has SN easy access and is located close to important Icons of the city of Toronto, the park creates a chance for people to be involved on the skate culture and admire the activity. As part of the research, it was noticeable that many fans of sports, such as baseball, doesn't necessarily play it, but still love it. The way this park would be exposing the activity of the skaters and creating observation area for spectator would allow the same, you don't need to be baseball player to love baseball, same way, it is not necessary to be a skater to love the skateboard as a sport and a culture.
This park would promote the sport and the lifestyle by creating interaction of the stakeholders of this high traffic location of Downtown Toronto.
